When Do I need a Root Canal?

Root canal treatment is needed when the pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth) becomes inflamed or infected as a result of injury, deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a cracked or chipped tooth.

Common symptoms that can be noticed when a root canal is needed include prolonged dental sensitivity to heat or cold, tenderness of teeth to touch and chewing, or facial or oral swelling

What are the symptoms needed for a root canal?

Is there paperwork I have to fill out?

Yes, we have paperwork that allows us to know how best to care for you. The first time you come into our office, we will have you fill out an interactive information sheet on the computer detailing your medical history.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please be prepared for your consultation appointment with the referral slip provided to you by your general dentist and any x-rays as necessary. Also, be sure to be prepared with updated insurance information, medical history, and a list of current medications and allergies.

We will be taking diagnostic X-Rays to determine the situation and treatment options. We will also take various x-rays throughout your treatment and after completion of your treatment to detail the process and  describe to you and your referring General Dentist how treatment went.

Will there be x-Rays taken?

Are the x-rays harmful?

The digital x-ray that we use requires a very minimal dose of radiation and we take every precaution when it comes to x-ray protection. We provide a lead vest that shields you and only take necessary images to ensure that you have minimal exposure. Be sure to let us know if you are or could be pregnant.

Will it be painful?

We will take every measure to ensure that your procedure is in no way uncomfortable or painful. If treatment is needed, we will inject a small amount of anesthetic to gently numb a concentrated area of your mouth. For most patients, the feeling of numbness usually subsides after 2-3 hours. We will prescribe medication as needed to manage post-treatment discomfort.

Will I have to have follow-up appointments?

Yes, when treatment is complete, we recommend that patients return to the office 6 mos - 1 year after the procedure was finished. Our office will send a reminder notice to you when you are due for a recall appointment.

Each situation is different, but we strive to give you the best care possible. Consultations to determine your treatment options usually last about 30 minutes and your root canal treatment usually includes 1-2 appointments over a two week period, each ranging 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on the treatment necessary. In some cases, treatment includes intermediate Medication appointments to induce healing that last about 30-45 minutes. Our focus is on your treatment and doing it right the first time.

How long will it take?
